Directions to Stuttgart
Stuttgart is very easy to reach by plane, car, or train and is well connected.
We give some directions for arriving by…
… car
Stuttgart is conveniently located at the intersection of two major motorways:
- A8 (east–west): connects Stuttgart with Karlsruhe and the Rhine valley in the west, and Ulm, Augsburg and Munich in the east.
- A81 (north–south): connects Stuttgart with Heilbronn and Würzburg to the north and with Singen and Switzerland to the south.
From the motorway, simply follow the signs for “Stuttgart Zentrum/Stadtmitte” to reach the city centre. Please note that traffic can be heavy during rush hours; allow extra time when arriving in the mornings and late afternoons.
Please note:
The Stuttgart urban area is considerd to be a „low emission zone“. This means that every car must have a green emissions sticker to be able to drive and park in Stuttgart.
… train
Stuttgart’s main station (Stuttgart Hauptbahnhof) is a major rail hub with frequent ICE, IC and regional trains from many German and European cities.
You can reach Stuttgart directly by train from, for example:
- Frankfurt and Frankfurt Airport
- Munich
- Zurich and other Swiss cities
- Many other German and European destinations via high-speed and regional services
From the main station, the city centre is only a short walk away, and you also have easy access to the local S-Bahn, U-Bahn (tram/metro), and bus network.
…plane
Stuttgart Airport (STR) is located about 13 km south of the city centre and offers frequent flights to many European cities and international hubs.
From the airport, you can reach downtown Stuttgart in around 30 minutes:
- S-Bahn (suburban train): Lines S2 and S3 run regulary between „Stuttgart Flughafen/Messe“ and „Stuttgart Hauptbahnhof“ (main station).
The train stop is located directly beneath the airport. Just follow the signs marked „S“. - U-Bahn (light rail): From the airport you can take the U6 direction to the main train station.
If you are travelling by S- or U-Bahn, buy a ticket for two zones at one of the orange colered venidng machines or the VVS app.
